Compared to last week: Fewer feeder cattle in the auctions this week as the extremely cold weather caused many cancellations. Feeder steers under 700 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, over 700 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Good demand for feeder cattle this week but with the sky-rocketing corn futures and free-falling feeder cattle futures at midweek cattle feeders took a step back to re-evaluate their game plan. The feeder cattle futures have been pointing to a very bullish feeder market in the coming months but runaway feed costs are extremely concerning. The Live Cattle futures aren’t painting as rosy of an outlook, and when coupled with costs of gain as high as the cost of the cattle there is reason for concern. Little snow cover across the state which is also adding to cattle producers’ worries as good spring rains will be necessary. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 5.00 higher, bulls 3.00 higher.
