Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 2.00 higher, except 650-750 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, feeder heifers steady to 4.00 higher. Demand moderate overall, unless the cattle are really green then the market gets very active. Flesh condition is the greatest value determining factor, especially in a year like this where feed costs are incredibly high and the fat market is weak. There is currently a lot of pressure on the feeder market. The corn market was very volatile this week, keeping concern of rising feedcosts front and center on cattle producer’s minds. The cash fed cattle market held around the 120.00 mark, this is leaving a spread of 210.00 per hundred between live cattle and boxed beef as Choice boxes ended the week at 330.00. Packers refuse to give up their huge margins as they keep a choke hold on the fat market. Demand for beef from consumers is outstanding, even with the high prices they are faced with but all of the profit in the industry is being taken by one sector of the industry leaving those who produce the product to contemplate leaving the industry. Drought conditions still remain across the state, except for a pocket in the northeast. Without rain cattle producers will have to sell down their herds and yearlings will begin moving off grass soon. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher, bulls steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
