Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, 700-850 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, over 850 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher, over 600 lbs 2.00 to 4.00. Good to very good demand for feeder cattle, best demand is centered on those light weight, light fleshed cattle to make yearlings out of whether they are backgrounded on grass or grown in a feedyard. CME Live Cattle futures made some gains this week, April up 1.70 to finally get back to the 120.00 level, which helped to support the feeder market at the auctions. Turn out time is quickly arriving, although West River, SD is in need of good spring moisture as dams are nearly empty and the soil profile is pretty dry. The supply of lightweight cattle is tight which is keeping that market red hot, in comparison to the heavier weight cattle which are widely available. Cattle feeders are getting closer to being profitable and with Aug Live Cattle contract at 121.00 and Oct and Dec at 124.00 and 127.00 there is hope for better days to come. East River has had rain and is now dealing with muddy ground conditions but temps are mild and wind in the forecast will help to improve that quickly. Cash fed cattle only reached 117.00, keeping cash 3.00 behind the April board. Cattle feeders are hoping to push the fat market higher this week as boxed beef keeps climbing higher. Calving time is upon us in full swing across much of the state and weather conditions have been pretty good making it much easier for cattlemen to keep those calves alive and healthy. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 2.00 higher, bulls 4.00 to 5.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
