South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

Slaughter CattleReceipts 2,945Last week 2,357Year ago 1,576

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 750 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, except 450-500 lbs and 550-600 lbs 1.00 to 2.00 higher, over 750 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 lower except 900-1000 lbs steady. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Very good demand for light fleshed cattle for backgrounding, only moderate demand for cattle bound for finishing yards. Cattle feeders backed off the gas this week in their pursuit of feeder cattle as a spring fed cattle rally seems to be withering away. April Live Cattle futures now only at 119.00, which is a now only a 5.00 premium to the current cash market. Large auction receipts again as spring is arriving quickly and calving time as well, cattle producers will need the additional space and time to devote to getting this year’s calf crop on the ground. The artic weather of two weeks ago was replaced with above normal temps which allowed cattle producers to get their cattle shipped to town easily. The market is very active for the cattle that will be backgrounded, either in a yard or on grass, as those cattle are getting tougher to find. There is a plentiful supply of heavier cattle that are heading to yards and are facing a much higher cost of gain as corn is substantially higher than last year, the market is not near as active for these cattle. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 lower, bulls 1.00 to 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
