Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 4.00 higher. Good to very good demand for all weights of feeder cattle this week. Temps were dangerously cold at the start of the week, which caused some consignment cancellations, but by the end of the week much warmer weather moved into the area. CME Live Cattle futures didn’t lend any support to the market until Fri when triple digit gains were finally made, triple digit losses were seen Tues through Thurs. Spring is just around the corner and yearling operators, whether they grow the cattle in yards or on grass, are needing to get their cattle bought while they are still available. With each passing week the supply of these light cattle gets a little tighter as last year’s calf crop are now yearlings already. There are still large supplies of heavier cattle as many cattle producers hung onto their calves a little longer this year as the weather was mild. These operators were also hopeful the market would improve as well as have heavier calves to sell. Cash fed cattle market continues to disappoint as breakeven prices are closer to 120.00 and the market just hasn’t been able to climb that high. The southern winter storm last week caused packing houses in that area to shutdown or reduce their kill levels which kept a lid on the fat market in the north as well. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 7.00 higher, bulls steady to 1.00 higher.
