Slaughter CattleReceipts 1,969Last week 2,439Year ago 4,761

Compared to last week: Steer calves 1.00 to 3.00 higher, heifer calves steady to 4.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, yearling heifers 3.00 to 5.00 higher, instances to 6.00 higher. Good demand for steer and heifer calves this week after the strong run-up in the CME Live Cattle futures. Farmer feeders have about finished their fall field work and have the time now to receive and start calves on feed. Feed supplies are plentiful, however CME Corn futures are at 4.00 and higher which is pushing projected costs of gain higher. The western SD calves that are coming to auction are in light flesh this year after a droughty summer, and then an early start to winter, that has resulted in calves being about 50 lbs lighter than normal. This has made those calves really attractive to cattle feeders as they carry a lot of compensatory gain. Much lighter offering of calves East River as cattle producers there have more feedstuffs available and the ability to wean and background. Very good demand for the strings of yearlings offered this week, especially the heifers that were straight off grass. Very few of these green yearlings left, the market is very active as there is great competition to buy them. The market is still active for the heavier fleshed feedyard backgrounded yearlings as cattle feeders want to have fat cattle ready for the late winter/early spring markets. Very large auction receipts expected next week, mostly calves. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 3.00 lower, except Breaker cows 3.00 higher. Bulls 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
