Compared to last week: Steer and heifer calves 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers and heifers 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Good demand for calves this week, which improved from last week. The winter storm that brought snow and very cold weather was replaced by seasonal temps and sunshine, which melted the snow and made for much better conditions to receive incoming calves into feedyards. Yearling demand moderate to good as the poor fed cattle market and weak futures complex has caused much concern amongst cattle feeders as they currently face losses. There are plenty of buyers ready to buy yearlings but they are approaching the market with more caution. Large calf offerings as western and central South Dakota cow/calf producers continue their fall marketing. Corn harvest is basically complete in Southeast SD, many more acres to combine yet remain in the Northeast. Cash corn has worked it’s way higher, which has also put pressure on the calf market this fall. Big discounts seen on calves that are lacking their preconditioning shots as the up and down weather and sloppy yard conditions are a perfect receipe for an outbreak of respiratory infections. Cattle feeders can’t afford to take on additional risk and many are unwilling to take a calf that hasn’t had the full compliment of vaccinations. Large auction receipts expected again for next week as the weather will warm making it easier to load trucks out of ranch corrals. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 5.00 lower, except Lean cows mostly steady. Bulls 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
