Compared to last week: Steer calves steady to 5.00 lower, instances to 10.00 lower on 500-550 lbs. Heifer calves 2.00 to 6.00 lower, instances of 8.00 to 10.00 lower. Yearling feeder steers under 900 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, over 900 lbs unevenly steady. Yearling feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. More moderate demand for calves this week, few auctions had sizable offerings of calves as the calf run hasn’t quite yet begun. Farmer feeder buyers are tied up with their corn harvest and working very quickly to get it out of the field as the crop is very dry, which accounted for some of the weakness in this week's calf market. Good demand remains for yearling steers and heifers as the supply of grass yearlings gets tighter. CME Live Cattle futures were able to make slight gains this week but with the current price level of yearlings, breakevens are much higher than where the futures contracts are presently at. Cattle feeders have held off packer bids of 107.00-108.00 so far for the week as they have their cattle priced at 110.00. Much larger auction receipts expected for next week as the calf runs begin in central and western South Dakota. Slaughter cows 3.00 to 4.00 lower, bulls 2.00 lower.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the South Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
