Compared to last week's fairly large volume steers sold 10.00 to 20.00 lower and heifers sold steady to 10.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good for calves, feeders, bred cows and cow/calf pairs. If all the reporting sale barns that report feeder cattle would allow USDA Market News to report their bred cow and pair special sales this week that number would have been very high compared to the reported volume of feeder cattle. Per NASS range and pasture conditions in Nebraska are 79 percent poor to very poor compared to 52 percent last year. (After this week last year, the rains came and conditions approved immensely!) Ranchers have made a very hard decision and are slowly downsizing their cow herds. Only bright note is that the selling prices is at record highs. Bulk of the bred cows and cow/calf pairs are headed to out-of-state producers. Another record in the books on the feedlot cash trade! Live sales sold steady to 5.00 higher from 260.00 to 265.00 and dressed sales sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher from 410.00 to 415.00.
