Compared to last week, light weight steer offerings under 600 lbs sold weak, 700-900 lbs steers traded steady to 5.00 higher, and heavier offering up to 1050 lbs were mostly steady. Heifers were unevenly steady with exception of weakness noted in the lighter offerings under 600 lbs. Demand was good with active buyer participation both in the barn and over the internet. The monthly cattle on feed report was released last Friday showing a 1 percent decline in total cattle on feed as of September 1st comparative to last year. Despite the decline this is still the second highest September 1st inventory on record since the series began in 1996. August placements rose 2 percent over last year at 2.10 million head likely in response to more favorable feeding margins. The direct fat cattle trade ranged from 123.00-125.00/cwt last week in the norther plains, Kansas was from 123.00-124.00, and Texas mostly at 124.00.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
