North Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, over 500 lbs 10.00 to 15.00 higher. Heifer calves under 550 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, over 550 lbs 10.00 to 13.00 higher. Very good demand for steer and heifer calves, best demand was centered on those calves in light enough flesh and weight to make a yearling out of and run on next year's grass. As grass cattle operators had a very good year, dependent upon when they marketed their yearlings, had a banner year and want to get their cattle bought now before spring. Cattle feeders are a little more wary of chasing the market too far and getting out ahead of where the futures contracts are at, as cash fed cattle are at 185.00 which is a much lower level for this time period than what was expected this summer when they were buying yearlings. A winter storm early week kept some cattle producers from getting their cattle hauled to town in central ND, which resulted in those auctions having lighter runs. This report will not be released next week as there will not be any of the normal reported auctions having feeder cattle sales due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the North Dakota barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
