Yearling steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Steer calves under 400 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to lower undertones were noticed. 400-449 lbs steers sold steady to 15.00 higher, steers 450-549 lbs sold 10.00 to 15.00 lower, steers over 550 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 lower. Heifer calves 350-449 lbs sold mostly 15.00-20.00 lower, Heifers 450-549 lbs sold generally steady to weak; Heifers over 550 lbs sold 10.00-15.00 lower. Demand was mostly moderate to good for light to moderate offerings. Demand from grass and wheat buyers continue to hold the light calf market near steady. Calves too heavy to go to grass saw considerable weakness as driven by lower CME positions. Quality this week limited demand in places as it was not as attractive as it has been over the last few weeks. CME positions remain volatile with large swings seen almost daily. The November contract settled Thursday at 339.72, 1.045 higher than Fridays close. The January contract closed at 320.55 314.225, 6.325 lower than last Friday. The March contract closed at 307.05, 6.30 lower than last Fridays close. A slightly smaller buyer pool was noticed this week. Market activity was mostly moderate this week, but not as active as last weeks sales. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for moderate offerings. Feeding cow demand remains good, however demand was not as strong as the last few weeks. All cow feeders report they are starting to fill pens and demand for feeding cows was lighter again this week as a result. High quality cows suitable to feed to premium white sold mostly steady to 3.00 lower. Thin cows sold generally steady as packers showed stronger demand for thin holiday feeding cows this week. This made up for lighter demand seen from private feeders and allowed thin cows to sell near steady. Demand for slaughter cows was mostly light. Many lame or blemished cows were seen again this week. Demand for lame and blemished cows was slightly better this week as fewer of these cows were seen. Breaking cows sold 2.00-4.00 lower, boning and lean cows sold steady to 3.00 lower. Regional packers were not in the market this past week. Slaughter bulls unevenly steady. Demand for feeding bulls helped improve or hold slaughter bull prices near steady. Good demand was seen for young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed. Coming 2 year old cows steady to 15.00 higher. Demand for these offerings has improved as some southern buyers reentered the market this week looking for cows to rebreed. Quality this week was mostly average to attractive and overall much better than the last few weeks.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
