Yearling steers and heifers were too lightly tested either this week or last to develop any market trend. Steer calves under 500 lbs sold generally steady, 500-549 lbs steers sold 15.00-20.00 higher, steers over 550 lbs sold mostly 25.00-40.00 lower. Steer calves over 550 lbs sold generally steady. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold generally steady to firm. Heifers over 600 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to weak undertones were noticed. Demand was mostly moderate to good with many takers for all weight classes this week. The driver of the light calf market was southern wheat buyers as they showed very good demand for light weight calves of both sexes to run on wheat pastures in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. CME positions remain volatile with large swings seen almost daily. The November contract closed at 326.40, 12.475 lower for the week. The January contract closed at 319.575, 12.325 lower than last Friday. This week a larger buyer pool was noticed with more takers seen. Market activity was mostly moderate to active this week. Weigh up cows sold on good to very good demand. Feeding cow demand remains very good and continues to be the driving force behind the cow market. Both packers and private feeders both continue to be very active as they put cows away on feed. Packer buyers purchased lame or slightly blemished cows for the holiday week's harvest. The large volume of cows allowed prices to fall slightly as demand diminished as buyers filled load after load. Feeding cows sold steady to 3.00 lower on high quality cows suitable to feed to premium white. Thin fleshed feeding cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 lower with many thin and slightly blemished cows seen. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower on breaking and boning cows, lean cows sold 2.00-4.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold generally steady to weak. Very good demand was seen for young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed. Coming 2 year old cows outsold yearling offerings again this week. Young offerings sold generally steady to 10.00 lower. Quality this week was not as attractive as last weeks offering and hampered demand slightly. A heavy offering of bred cows was seen this week as buyers showed mostly moderate demand for bred cows. Bred cow quality was mostly plain to average and hampered demand as a result. Very few high quality young cows were seen this week.
