Steer calves over 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves under 400 lbs sold sharply higher with many sales over 20.00 higher, heifer calves 400-649 lbs sold mostly 5.00-15.00 higher. Demand was mostly good to very good for the bulk of the week on moderate to heavy offerings. A few load lots were seen this week and demand was good to very good for load lot offerings, while packages of calves sold on moderate to good demand. Demand for packages of calves was lighter late in the week as CME positions softened. Very good demand was seen for light weight calves suitable to develop into yearlings. Buyers are active early and are busy buying calves for that purpose. Demand for high quality heifer calves was very good as buyers purchase calves to sort to develop into replacements. CME positions continue to march higher with triple digit movement seen much of the week, however limit lower movement was seen Friday as contracts locked limit lower on every contract but the current October. As of Fridays close the October closed at 371.95, down 3.55 for the week, the November contract closed Friday at 371.70, 4.20 higher The January contract closed at 369.30. Only extremely poor or very blemished cows were purchased for immediate harvest this week. Slaughter cows were to lightly tested the previous week to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to weak undertones were noticed on all offerings. Feeding cow demand was very good. Even cows which were slightly blemished, some buyers were willing to put on feed. Feeding cows sold 2.00-5.00 higher. Quality was mostly average to attractive. The spread between slaughter cows and feeding cows remains very large. Slaughter bulls sold on good demand for moderate offerings. Bulls sold unevenly. Bulls suitable to feed sold firm. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 5.00 lower, with the biggest drop in value seen for large bulls, blemished, or very lame bulls not suitable to feed. Very good demand was seen for all sound bulls suitable to feed. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold on very good demand for light offerings. Offerings sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Buyers showed willingness to buy older cows which were in good condition to re-pregnancy test or to rebreed.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
