Compared to last week: Too few sales were seen this week to develop any market trend. Feeder cattle were mostly offered in small to moderate size packages. Demand was good to very good for light offerings. Quality this week was mostly plain to average. CME positions traded sideways for most of the week as the shortened holiday week saw some higher and some lower settlements. The August feeder cattle contract closed at 258.375, 3.60 lower than last Fridays close, the September closed at 259.90, 2.80 lower than the previous week. Market activity this week was mostly active, with a good crowd on hand and several internet bidders actively bidding. Weigh up cows and bulls comprised the majority of the cattle offering this week. Ranchers continue to cull cows as many are wrapping up branding and are turning out cows. Some cows who have yet to calve are being sold as ranchers don't want to deal with the hassle of late calves. Packers showed good to very good demand for slaughter cows for immediate harvest. Additional packer buyers were in the market this week and were very aggressive as they searched for slaughter cows for harvest. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00-5.00 higher on breaking cows. Boning cows sold 4.00-8.00 higher; lean cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher. Packers showed very good demand for feeding cows, however with additional packer buyers in the market they were forced to pay significantly higher prices for cows in order to secure offerings. Feeding cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 higher with instances of 6.00-9.00 higher seen at times on very high quality offerings. Packers also purchased average quality thin and light boning cows to hold for the upcoming 4th of July holiday; these offerings sold mostly 2.00-3.00 higher. Quality this week was mostly average to attritive with many high quality reputation cows seen. Quality and weigh conditions were both more attractive to buyers this week compared to last week. Weigh up conditions were mostly average to above average. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 3.00 to 5.00 higher. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold mostly steady to 10.00 lower. Quality was average to attractive. The calendar is starting to get late in the season to buy cows to rebreed so many buyers are slowing down on purchasing offerings for that purpose. Cows purchased this week to rebreed would mostly be April and later calving cows.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
