Compared to last week: Steer calves were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertone were noticed on steers under 750 lbs and steady undertones were noticed on steers over 750 lbs. Heifers were all too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however all offerings sold with generally steady undertones. Quality this week was mixed, from plain to very attractive. Several of the largest consignments this week were one iron home-raised calves, and these were met with very good demand. Demand for grass cattle remains very good as buyers purchased steers up to 760 lbs and heifer up to 660 lbs for that purpose. Demand for heavy weight offerings was moderate. Backgrounded cattle were met with moderate demand as most offerings sold steady. Most backgrounded offerings were carrying moderate amounts of flesh and tag this week. Plain to average quality cattle saw the biggest jump in price this week as buyers focused more on buying offerings and having cattle in their possession rather than quality. Market activity was active again this week as large crowds were on hand for all sales. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good to very good demand for light to moderate offerings. Western packer buyers continue to show good demand for cows for immediate harvest, while eastern packers showed mostly moderate demand. Packers also continued to put cows away on feed. Slaughter cows sold 1.00 to 4.00 higher on breaking cows, boning and lean cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher. Feeding cows sold steady to 2.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher in a narrow comparison, however attractive high dressing bulls saw sharply higher prices as two packer buyers competed over limited offerings. Bull quality this week was mostly below average as many younger, light weight bulls, continue to be seen. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold steady to firm. One consignment of 170 head, tested open 2 coming 3 year olds which were tested safe to breed sold with very good demand this week. These offerings averaged over 1,720.00 per head!

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
