Compared to last week: All weights of steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed on steers and mostly higher undertones were noticed on heifers. Quality this week was mixed from plan to attractive. Most offerings were in small lots or singles this week with only a few packages of cattle seen. Despite light offerings demand was mostly good this week. CME positions slowed upward momentum as they moved sideways for the week. On Friday the August contract closed at 174.475, 0.60 higher for the week, while the September closed at 176.05, 0.25 lower for the week. Order buyers and ranchers looking for grass cattle were very competitive over limited offerings. Market activity was mostly active as a result. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold with the best demand this week as western packers were very active in buying cows for immediate harvest. Breaking cows sold with the lightest demand this week as these offerings sold steady to 2.00 higher. Boning cows sold 2.00-3.00 higher, while lean cows sold with the best demand and sold mostly 2.00-5.00 higher. Feeding cows sold steady to 4.00 higher as stronger slaughter demand pushed all cows higher. Many high quality cows were seen this week as ranchers brand calves and sell off cows which lost calves or have yet to calve. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm. Bull quality this week was average to attractive. Weigh conditions were very good for buyers this week as most cows were very empty and hallowed out from the fresh green grass. Yields this week were significantly higher than last week on both cows and bulls. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Quality this week was average to attractive. Demand for rebreed type cattle strengthened this week following higher CME feeder cattle prices and additional rains which have pastures and range in very good condition in many parts of the state.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
