Compared to last week: All weights of steers were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however steady undertones were noticed on steers under 800 lbs, weak undertones noticed on steers over 800 lbs. Heifer under 550 lbs were too lightly tested to develop a market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed. Heifers 550-749 lbs sold mostly 2.00-4.00 lower. Heifers over 750 lbs not well compared. Quality this week was mixed from plain to attractive. Quality this week was much more attractive overall compared to last week. Demand for feeder cattle was mixed with mostly good demand for cattle under 750 lbs suitable to run on grass and mostly light to moderate demand for heavy weight cattle destined for the feedlot. Each sale had a few ranchers looking to buy cattle to run on grass this summer as recent rains have helped green pastures. Local ranchers showed good demand and were very competitive bidders this week. A few sets of replacement quality heifers continue to be seen. These offerings continue to be met with good demand. Heavy weight cattle buyers showed lighter demand as outside equities played a big roll in feeder and live cattle contracts this week. CME positions were lower for much of the week. On Friday the May contract closed at 153.40 while the August 163.925. Market activity this week was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate to heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00-3.00 higher on breaking cows, while boning and lean cows sold steady to 2.00 higher. Demand for slaughter cows was higher this week as western packer buyers showed stronger demand for all classes of slaughter cows. Feeding cows sold steady to 1.00 higher. Packers showed increased demand for cows to feed as they showed concern that cow supplies should lighten seasonally due to better pasture and range conditions. Slaughter bulls sold steady to firm. Weigh conditions were mixed this week. Green grass has started to help cows slick off winter hair and has many emptied out, however, with rain seen late in the week these cows were pushing more fill. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold steady to weak. Quality this week was average to attractive. Demand for rebreed type cattle remains good.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
