Compared to last week: Steer calves under 700 lbs sold mostly 10.00 lower; steers over 700 lbs were not well compared. Heifers under 650 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, lower undertones were noticed; heifers over 650 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower. Quality this week was mixed from plain to attractive. Quality was noticeably lower compared to last weeks attractive offering. The best demand continues to be for grass cattle. Heifer demand remains very good this week as heifers continue to offer buyers higher quality consignments compared to steers. Many sets of heifers are off of, or were save for replacements by the rancher, but were forced to sell due to drought conditions. CME positions were mostly lower this past week. Many feeders are weighing higher input costs and are being forced to buy cattle lower as increased inputs have not been offset by higher live cattle contracts. The August feeder cattle contract closed Friday at 173.55, 2.80 lower than last week. The April closed Friday at 156.55, 4.85 lower; the May contract closed Friday at 159.375, 7.175 lower. Market activity was mostly moderate this week with a smaller crowd compared to last week. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for moderate offerings. Slaughter demand was mostly moderate this week. While packers tried to buy slaughter cows lower, feeding cow buyers kept prices near steady as they competed over lower quality cows which packers would normally send to harvest. Slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 higher on breaking cows. Boning and lean cows sold steady to weak. Feeding cows sold steady to weak. Weigh up conditions were mostly below average for buyers this week with many cows were pushing heavy amounts of fill. Slaughter bulls sold fully steady. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold steady to 3.00-8.00 lower. These offerings were met with moderate demand this week, which was lighter than last week. Feeding demand was off significantly as high input costs and lower live cattle futures are mostly to blame.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
