Compared to last week: Yearling steers were all too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. Yearling heifers 750-799 lbs sold weak, heifers over 800 lbs sold 2.00-4.00 lower. Quality was mostly plain to average for yearlings. Demand was light to moderate for all yearlings on offer. Steer calves under 400 lbs sold sharply lower, with most sales 15.00-25.00 lower. Steer calves over 400 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 lower. Heifer calves under 400 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 lower, heifer calves over 400 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 lower. Demand for calves was light to moderate. Calf quality this week was average to very attractive and similar to last week. Several load lots of calves were seen this week and these offerings sold on the best demand. Calf marketings continue to be way ahead of year ago levels. Many farmers in the Midwest are still not ready for calves as most are busy with harvest. This was the biggest factor limiting demand this week. Demand for lightweight calves to send south to wheat lightened significantly as some feeders have started to fill up. CME positions traded mostly lower this week. The September feeder contract closed Thursday at 153.925 0.70 lower, while the October closed at 152.55, 4.80 lower. The November contract closed 152.90. Market activity this week was mostly slow to moderate. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand for heavy offerings. Packers showed slightly more demand for slaughter cows this week as harvest has slowed the volume of cows being delivered directly to the plant. Slaughter cows sold generally steady to weak. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady from 2.00 higher to 2.00 lower. Quality was mixed this week and very heavy offerings led to uneven prices at times. Slaughter bulls sold steady to weak. Many long strings of cows were sold as exposed again this week. Most older cows sold as exposed or ranch tested bred. Young replacement cows sold on mostly good demand again this week. Quality was mostly attractive this week with many long strings of one iron home-raised open cows. Offerings sold steady to 5.00 higher.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
