Compared to last week: Yearling steers were too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Yearling heifers sold with lower undertones. Steer calves under 500 lbs sold mostly 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Steers 500-599 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 lower, steers over 600 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower. Heifer calves under 500 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 lower, heifers over 500 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 lower. Quality this week was average to very attractive. Many long strings of weaned calves were on offer. Most calves were weaned 60-90 days. Cattle sold in mostly moderate size packages with several load lots on offer as well. Corn and soybean prices continue to increase following the bullish WASDE report that was released last Tuesday. Feeder cattle contracts have fallen off sharply over the last week as a result. The January feeder cattle contract closed at 134.575 and the March closed at 135.825 a loss of 1.25 and 1.00 respectfully since last Friday. Market activity this week was mostly active to very active with many buyers actively bidding on offerings. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light to moderate demand for mostly heavy offerings. Packers were less active this week as they showed no desire to push the market higher in order to obtain offerings. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 lower on all classes. Feeding cow demand was moderate throughout the week. The majority of cows sold this week returned to the country to feed. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold on mostly good demand this week. Bulls sold mostly steady to 3.00 higher as feeding buyers pushed packer buyers in order to buy offerings. 2 year old to young age cows sold on light demand for mostly moderate offerings. This class of cows sold generally steady.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
