Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs were too lightly tested either this week or last to develop an accurate market trend,

however steady undertones were noticed. Steers over 700 lbs sold mostly steady to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers 550-699 lbs sold mostly 3.00-

6.00 higher all other weights of heifers were not well compared. Quality this week was average to attractive and very comparable to last

week. Demand was moderate to good this week and slightly higher than last week. Both feedlot buyers and grass buyers were very active in

bidding and purchasing offerings. Several load lots were seen again this week and these offerings were met with mostly good demand. Flesh

conditions were mostly light to moderate with very few fleshy offerings seen this week despite a large portion of the offering coming out of

backgrounding lots. CME positions continue to see very volatile movement. Feeder cattle futures traded mixed for most of the week. As of

Thursdays settlements the April contract closed at 119.425, May at 117.275, and August at 126.375 which is 1.175 higher, 1.20 lower, and

and 2.25 lower respectfully from last Thursdays close to this Thursdays close. Market activity this week was mostly moderate to active. Weigh

up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand for light to moderate offerings. Packers continue to show moderate to good demand for

slaughter cows this week. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to 1.00 higher on boning and lean cows. Breaking cows were too lightly tested to

trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Packers purchased to majority of cows for harvest this week with the exception of a few

young cows which they purchased to feed. Feeding cow buyers picked around the edges this week as they tried to pick a few cows away from

packers. Feeding cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to higher undertones were noticed.

Slaughter bulls sold mostly 1.00-3.00 higher. Cow and bull quality was mostly average this week. Weigh up conditions were mixed with warm

weather causing cows and bulls to push fill later in the sales. Weekly beef slaughter remains light. Through Thursday week to date slaughter

was 339,000 head compared to 376,000 head last week and 477,000 head last year. Young age cows suitable to feed or re-breed sold

generally steady to 5.00 higher. Feeding demand remains moderate and continues to support this class of cows due to low cost.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
