Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Quality was plain to average and mostly offered in small to medium size packages. Demand for grass cattle was mostly moderate to good, while demand for lighter or heavier cattle was light to moderate. Local ranchers played a big roll in higher prices this week as many were in the stands bidding on offerings to fill grass leases. CME prices traded lower throughout the week with sharply lower prices seen on Thursday. CME positions from last Thursday through this Thursday saw the current May contract expire last Friday at 136.81 up 1.21. The August contract settled at 138.225, down 4.80, September settled at 138.525 down 5.475, and the October settled at 138.35, down 5.875. Market activity this week was mostly moderate. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand. Packers were back in the market this week purchasing cows mostly for immediate harvest and a few very high quality cows to feed. Cows started the week fully steady, however by mid week packers were forced to pay higher money in order to buy cows. Overall slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher. Feeding cows sold unevenly steady from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. Buyers looking for lower quality short term feeding cows were pushed out of the market by packer buyers and buyers purchasing high quality feeding cows were mostly absent from the market or they tried to purchase these cows lower. Slaughter bulls sold fully steady. All cows continued to show fill again this week, with many pushing more fill than last week. Young age cows sold on moderate to good demand this week. Demand for re-breed cows continues to be good. Quality was average to attractive. These offerings sold mostly steady to firm. A solid offering of cow calf pairs sold this week and these offerings sold on moderate to good demand as quality was mostly average to attractive. Many ranchers were in the stands this week bidding on offerings. Pair prices were the highest this week since late April when CME contract prices began to fall.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
