Compared to last week: Feeder steers 400-749 lbs sold mostly steady to weak, all other weights were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. Heifers 500-649 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, 650-799 lbs heifers sold mostly 3.00-7.00 lower. Demand for grass cattle this week was moderate to good and despite lower CME contract prices these offerings were able to hold mostly steady or gain ground in some instances. Buyers were able to put together load lots this week as many load lots and large packages were on offer. A heavy offering of backgrounded cattle out of grow lots were seen this week. These cattle were in moderate plus to fleshy condition. Quality was mostly attractive on all cattle out of grow lots this week. Quality overall was average to attractive. CME positions from last Thursday through this Thursday saw the current May contract down 2.02 to settle at 134.225 while the August settled at 143.325, down 1.15. Market activity this week was mostly moderate, with moderate to active activity seen at times. Weigh up cows sold on good to very good demand throughout the week. Packers showed need for cows for immediate harvest as they bid aggressively on the majority of the cows on offer. Feeding demand was good as well, as buyers fought packers at all three sales this week as they attempted to put together orders. Both Feeding and Packer buyers attempted to capitalize on the heavy run of cows as ranchers cull many non blemished dry or late bred cows after branding. Cow quality this week was mostly attractive to very attractive. The cutter cow cutout was 172.61 as of yesterdays close. The cow cutout continues to see upward momentum as 90% lean trim continues to be the driving force. Demand for slaughter bulls was good this

week as packers continue to search for lean grinding materials for ground beef. Several bulls sold for over 100.00 cwt this week. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 higher. Feeding cows sold steady to 2.00 higher. Cows started out the week offering buyers an outstanding weigh up, however as the week progressed a changing weather pattern had cows showing lots of fill. Young age cows sold unevenly steady this week. Demand for re-breed cows was moderate to good while demand for feeding cows was light to moderate. A light offering of pairs was seen this week. Quality was average to attractive. Demand for pairs has lightened as buyers look at lower CME prices and have adjusted prices accordingly.

Head, weight ranges, average weights and price ranges are exactly as USDA AMS filed them — nothing recomputed, nothing rounded — in USDA's own reporting structure. This is RaisedBeef's rendering of that data, not a copy of USDA's document.
Source: USDA AMS, as filed — nothing recomputed and nothing rounded. This summary aggregates the same sales the Montana barn reports cover, so it must never be added to a state total built from those barns.
