Counted as USDA files them — 232 of those are cow-calf pairs, each counted once.

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 15.00 higher, with some lightweight grazing type calves seeing gains of 20.00-25.00. The supply of feeders was light as the week started off with what was hopefully the last cold spell of the year. Many areas seen a bit of snow and some frost early in the week which very likely caused a bit of damage. It was short lived as record highs were seen late week and over the weekend for the official start of Spring. Winds have been very strong which should help to firm up fields as many look to get fertilizer on hay fields and pastures soon. Thus far planting hasn't begun but no doubt it isn't far away. Ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to push fuel and fertilizer prices higher at a very inopportune time. Demand for all classes of cattle is good to very good. From grazing type calves, heifers that have replacement potential, to bred cows and pairs, are all finding plenty of buying interest. Fed cattle slaughter remains as a historically slow pace, so the current labor strike at the plant in CO isn't really having much effect on price levels at this point. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday. Numbers were within the ranges of pre-report estimates. On feed was reported at 99.7 percent, marketings reported at 93.2 percent, and placements at 103.6 percent. As typical the placement numbers draw the most attention and on the surface the months number did bring up some questions. Digging deeper though placements in Feb of '25 were reported down 18% due not only to the loss of Mexican imports but also very limited sales in the US due to a couple of weeks of extreme weather. So even with lower cattle numbers it isn't hard to see how this year's placements were higher. With the light supply this week stick out sales of drafts over 20 head were a bit harder to find in several weight classes that being sale a few included 43 head of 542 lb. steers at Springfield Livestock Marketing Center which sold for 540.00. Green City Livestock Market sold 34 head of 660 lb. steers for 449.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 23 head of 712 lb. steers for 420.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold two loads of 807 lb. steers for 365.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a small pkg of 11 of 507 lb. heifers at 490.00 and 28 head of 704 lb. heifers at 385.00. Boxed beef cutout values closed slightly higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 400.11, up 2.19 and select closed at 392.94, up 1.40 compared to last week. The choice/select spread at 7.17 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday afternoons report was just under 44k head. Live prices were reported mostly steady at 235.00 and dressed sales also mostly steady at 372.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3338 head with a weighted average weight of 530.86 lbs. and a price value of 488.96, 17.25 higher than last week and setting a new record high. The steer/heifer spread is 56.13.
