Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold 5.00 to 15.00 lower and yearlings sold steady to 5.00 lower. The supply was moderate, a much larger offering than the shorten holiday week last week. A few auctions starting to see the beginnings of what will be the fall calf run, with several unweaned and unvaccinated calves in the offering. A somewhat surprising number of big yearlings continue to show up in load lots around the state. Demand was moderate just at lower price levels. Lack of significant moisture over the last few weeks is really starting to take its toll on pastures. As of the latest drought monitor near 79 percent of the state is listed as abnormally to severely dry. There have been some reports of a few folks having to feed some hay as pastures have just dried up. Although corn harvest is underway and those folks would prefer not to deal with mud, the cattle man would sure like some rain to give pastures a kick start into fall growth. A few stick-out sales this week included 37 head of 524 lb. steers at F &T Livestock Market that sold for 312.50, as well as 32 head of 770 lb. heifers which sold for 233.75. Callaway Livestock Center sold 31 head of 665 lb. steers at 282.75. South Central Regional Stockyards had a load of 757 lb. steers which brought 252.00. Tina Livestock Market sold a load of 858 lb. steers for 243.75 as well as, a load of 513 lb. heifers unweaned for 280.00. The largest draft of the week was 468 head of 944 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 227.10. There was a total of 22 drafts of 100 plus head each, with 5 of those being from 246-468 head that sold at auctions this week. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for the week, choice closed on Friday at 304.91, down 4.50 and select closed at 294.17, down 1.95 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled only about 37K head. Live sales were reported from 181.00-184.00 and dressed sales from 285.00-294.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5167 head with a weighted average weight of 550.70 lbs. and a price value of 275.96, 11.57 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 23.61 per cwt.
