Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, with several calves 10.00 to 20.00 higher. The supply of feeders was heavy as weather conditions were favorable for getting cattle to town and across the country. Several producers have decided to market calves now rather than wait given current price levels and the lack of any extra feed on hand. Demand was good to very good. Buyers are trying to fill orders for grazing calves already and bigger feeders are not having many problems finding pen space in feedlots either. Once again, we are back to talking about record or near record prices at the auctions. Yearling are close but understandably so as grazing season is approaching it's the calf market that is pushing towards new territory. Weaning and vaccinations still matter and make a difference in price although the discounts might not be as severe as they typically are in the early fall months. The semiannual cattle inventory report was released midweek and as expected the cattle herd was reported down 2% and the lowest since 1951. Missouri saw a 6% or 116,000 head drop in momma cows due mostly to the drought over the summer. Several stick out sales this week included a part load of 449 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 360.00. A load of 546 lb. steers at Green City Livestock Market sold for 312.50. Unionville Livestock Market sold a load of 643 lb. steers for 290.00. Interstate Regional Stockyards sold a load of 730 lb. steers at 252.75. Boxed beef cutouts were unable to hold on to the 300.00 mark. On Friday choice closed at 293.08, down 7.45 and select closed at 283.47, down 5.66 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was 60K reported for the week. Live sales were reported at 176.00-179.00 and dressed sales at 280.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 8713 head with a weighted average weight of 559.79 lbs. and a price value of 290.14, 12.38 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 40.95. This was also a record high price value.
