Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher with several instances of 10.00 higher as markets basically gained back all of last week's losses and are even with two weeks ago. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Heat continued to impact market receipts, although this is typical as this is generally the slower time of the year for marketing. There will be a few special sales over the next few weeks as barns hold special yearling sales for several farmers that hold or put together loads of cattle to make some heavy weight yearlings in order to hit the market specifically at this time knowing supplies are light. Demand for yearlings is good, calf demand depends hugely on condition and health risk. Perhaps not as extreme as it is when the fall temperature swings occur, but extreme heat is also a huge risk to cattle and not conducive to easy weight gain. This results in unweaned or calves with long hair or extra flesh seeing fairly significant discounts. Boxed beef cutouts were slightly lower, choice closed at 264.98, down 1.28 and select at 245.02, down 1.51 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales totaled just under 91K head as of the Friday afternoon report. The unusually wide spread between live sales in the north and south continued with sales ranging from 137.00 to 150.00, dressed sales were reported from 234.00 to 240.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5961 head with a weighted average weight of 548.82 and a price value of 189.80, 6.50 higher than last week.
