Compared to last week, calves under 650 lbs. sold unevenly steady with some from 4.00 lower to 2.00 higher, heavier weights especially loads over 800 lbs. sold fully steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate. Several of the southern sales saw lighter than normal receipts due to weather issues. Heavy rains which totaled 6-7 inches or more in places caused flooding and made it impossible to get cattle moved out of the country in most areas south of I-44. All the northern sales were doing business this week and had fairly large sales with many load lots of heavy weight quality cattle. A load of 839 lb. steers sold at Green City Livestock Auction on Wednesday at 165.75, about ten or so other loads of 8 weights, which sold there and at 4 or 5 other barns all across the state sold from 155.00 to 160.10. An expected multiday break in the weather with very warm temperatures should give many farmers a window to finally get some crops in the ground especially in the northern half of the state which didn't receive the heavy rains last week. Much of the rest of the Corn Belt is going to burn a lot of diesel and clock some long hours planting as well. Corn futures fell on Friday anticipating farmers wanting to price some crop as soon as they get it in the ground and as of this report Monday morning corn futures are continuing to fall. Boxed beef cutouts lost several dollars again this week, which seems to be mostly a factor of inflation and high gas cost which is cutting in to grocery budgets. Choice closed at 254.44 down 6.34 and select closed at 245.06, down 2.91 compared to last week. Feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totally just under 108K head although like last week many of these were bought with some time and will not deliver for a few weeks to a month down the road. Live sales were reported mostly from 138.00-146.00, with a few early in the north 148.00-150.00, dressed sales from 230.00-232.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 6483 head with a weighted average weight of 532.47 lbs. and a price value of 188.88, 1.10 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 27.77.
