Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 2.00 higher, with several 500-700 lb. steers 2.00 to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. The week got off to a good start but business was brought to a standstill by midweek and the majority of sales remained dark due to a wide spread winter storm. Snow fall amounts varied from basically nothing in the northwest corner of the state to the heaviest being central to north east, where amounts reached and past 10 inches. Farther south amounts of 2-6 were common with some ice mixed in before snow fell. Heavy winds caused drifting which made many country roads impassable for a time. Temperatures got below zero in some areas which was a big change from the 60 degree seen just a couple days prior to the storm. Many farmers are already calving and the cold made for a few long nights as farmers spent several hours outside to make sure any newborns got up and nursed. Not necessarily the highest prices, but a few notable load lots from this week included; 80 head of 657 lb. steers sold at Green City Livestock Auction for 191.00, 49 head of 724 lbs. steers sold at F and T Livestock Market for 171.25, several loads of heavy 7 weight steers sold at Joplin Regional stockyards in the upper 150’s, and Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 62 head of 882 lb. steers for 156.85. The semi-annual Cattle Inventory Report was released on Monday there wasn’t a lot of surprises overall. Everyone knew number would be lower nationwide following the extreme drought seen over much of the major cattle producing areas. Missouri saw a 5% drop in beef cows which had calved, that equates to a loss of 94,000 head. For all cattle and calves, beef and dairy, the state saw a decline of 270,000 head or 6% of the total herd. As of the Friday afternoon report negotiated feedlot sales were just over 95K head. Live sales were mostly 138.00-140.00 and dressed sales mostly at 222.00, both gaining a few dollars this week. Boxed beef cutout values lost several dollars, choice closed on Friday at 279.81, down 10.61 and select at 276.05, down 7.36 from the previous week. The choice/select spread has narrowed to only 3.76. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4211 head with a weighted average weight of 553.25 and a price value of 181.77, 2.18 higher than last week.
