Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply of feeders was light as extreme heat once again affected what is normally a light time for marketing cattle anyway. Heat indices climbed into the triple digits for several days and it isn’t a dry heat in Missouri. Demand was moderate to good. Buyers are discounting the unweaned bawling calves that won’t adjust to a new environment or dry dust very well and these discounts will continue to get larger each week until after frost and temperatures stabilize in another month and a half or so. Heavier weight load lots of yearlings on the other hand get buyers on the phones and closer to the edges of their seats. A couple of highlights this week was a pot load of steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction weighting 839 lbs. and sold for 164.00, another pot load at New Cambria Livestock Market weighting 925 lbs. sold for 155.25. Dry conditions have several farmers finding pasture and hay crop damage from army worms. Infestations in Missouri haven’t been as devastating as some other states but there has been several finding populations high enough to require spraying. What is catching many off guard is populations are being found much farther north than is typical catching many producers off guard. Boxed beef cutouts were a little calmer this week, Choice closed on Friday at 345.34, up 0.28 and select at 315.52, 3.01 lower than the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the last report on Friday afternoon totaled just under 52k head. It is likely more took place after hours and just didn’t get turned in to make the report. Live sales for the week were reported mostly from 122.00-128.00 and dressed sales from 200.00-208.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 2695 head with a weighted average weight of 555.58 lbs. and a price value of 171.07, 2.60 higher than last week.
