Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves were sharply lower in limited comparisons. Yearling steers sold steady to 5.00 lower and yearling heifers sold 2.00 to 10.00 lower. Demand was moderate. The CME cattle complex moved sharply lower this week after Wednesday's announcement of another fed cattle slaughter plant closing immediately citing one of the most historic cattle shortages the country has ever experienced. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Compared to last week, very limited trading of Kansas negotiated fed cattle sold 7.00 lower at 228.00. In the hay market, hay movement and prices remained steady across the state. Much of Kansas continues to need significant moisture to support alfalfa production and row crop development. Third cutting alfalfa is generally yielding below average in most regions, with many producers reporting only marginal production. Prairie hay harvest is progressing, with overall yields reported as average.
