Compared to last week, Choice slaughter steers and heifers sold 1.00-2.00 higher. Steers calves under 800 lbs moved 2.00-5.00 higher, while yearlings over 800 lbs trended 1.00-2.00 lower. Heifers sold 1.00-5.00 higher across all weight categories. Very heavy offerings this week, as produces took advantage of the unseasonably warm temperature to move their 2019 calf crop. Historically, this week yields the largest receipt totals, due to many auction barns being shut down the previous two weeks around the holidays. Coupled, with producers waiting until after first the year to sell. Thus, giving cattle longer weaning period and making them more attractive to buyers. Buyers continue to discount short weaned cattle as unpredictable winter weather awaits.
