Welcome to winter feeding season. The first glimpse of snow showed itself last week, as well as the hay coming in to the sale. There was large supply with a large crowd on site, with very good demand at the SWMO Hay Auction. Grass hay all around showed a weaker trend. A few lots showed some strength. 2nd cutting alfalfa orchard topped the sale with 3 semi loads recorded at the sale, topping at $150/bale "$200/ton" 2nd cut brome/orchard $80-90/bale "$140/ton". On the square side, prairie hay in 3x3 bales started active bidding with the load figuring $151/ton once math was figured. Bidding continued to be on fire for several lots with the quality of the hay offered in big squares, better than normal sales. 2-3x4 alfalfa PREMIUM, tested over 200rfv and as green as the day it was cut, weighing 1800+lbs sold for a record price of $400/bale, "Over $444/ton", while it is undetermined how much a full lot would have sold for, it was still a jaw dropping moment for buyers and sellers. Several other lots of high quality alfalfa sold today with most of the dairy quality alfalfa approaching $300/ton. Small square continues to spark interest with some fancy bermuda topping over $13/bale. There was a short supply of alfalfa in small squares, but there was a good offering of mixed grass small squares.
Total offerings:
2011 or 42% were round bales and 2819 or 58% were square bales.
