A surprisingly large crowd was on hand at Southwest Missouri Hay Auction as temperatures climbed into the 90's which is well above average for October. The supply of hay was heavy, with this being the largest volume sale for the location so far. Demand was moderate to good. Locally the area is quite dry with some feeding occurring. There is however, no shortage of hay in the local area or anywhere in the state for that matter as the yields of early harvest were tremendous. Several loads of hay came from western states as producers there look for better markets. Fair to good quality hay in the round bales sold mostly lower, most of the "cow" type hay sold from $65-90 per ton with only a few lots passing the $100 per ton level. Higher quality hay however was a much different case. A few lots of Good/Premium quality round bales tallied up either side of $200 per ton. Some premium quality 3x3 squares of orchard grass sold with a top of $337 per ton and some Alfalfa/Orchard Grass mix topping the day at $440 per ton. Most of the Good quality Alfalfa in 3x3 squares sold $200-250 per ton with some Premium quality Alfalfa or grass that was suitable as horse hay at or just over $300 per ton.
