Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers too lightly tested last week to allow a good comparison with this week's very large offering, firm to higher undertones prevailed. Good to very good demand for all classes and weights of cattle for this year's customer appreciation BBQ sale. A hundred plus consignors offered cattle for this sale, numerous small packages of light weight yearlings along with many long strings of yearlings ranging from part loads to full, multiple load lots. The flesh condition was rather attractive overall as there were many light fleshed yearlings to choose from, yet there were also heavier fleshed heavy weight cattle that will reach finished weights in 60-90 days. There were a lot of buyers in town ready to buy these cattle, the cattle futures remain sluggish as the summer and fall months are stuck in the 90's but the market was very active in spite of this. The lower fed cattle market and bearish price structure of the Live Cattle futures has cattle feeders really concerned about the coming months in the fed cattle trade. Cash corn remains cheap which is helping to bring breakeven prices lower, yet cattle feeders are still struggling to sell their finished cattle so they are careful not to get too bullish on the market. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls too lightly tested.
