Compared to last week feeder steers weighing from 550 lbs to 649 lbs were mostly 2.00 to 4.00 higher; 650 lbs to 699 lbs were 2.00 to 4.00 lower; 700 lbs to 749 lbs were steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers were steady to 3.00 lower. A large run of yearling cattle in today's auction with no comparison made to last weeks limited supply of yearlings. The majority of today's yearlings were of plainer quality than what is normally seen in this part of the country. The demand for today's yearlings was not as robust as in the past sales, buyers were content to wait for the weaned calves rather than gobble up the yearlings like they have done in past sales. Good to very good demand for today's offering of fully preconditioned long time weaned calves. More demand for the lighter fleshed, hay fed calves when compared to the backgrounded calves that were fleshier for condition. Over all quality was lacking compared to previous sales, although there were some fancy calves with lots of genetics in them. A good crowd of buyers at today's auction made for a very active market. The commodity cowboys have been a bit tough on the cattle futures market this past week; taking some of the enthusiasm away form today's auction. On feed report this afternoon came out as expected. Next feeder auction will be Friday, January 31st expecting a large run of high quality feeders.
