Reading the numbers

USDA marks a figure exactly as USDA reported it. Derived marks our arithmetic on USDA figures, with the method stated beside it — almost always a weighted average, SUM(price × head) ÷ SUM(head), the same rule on every page.

Every figure carries the period it covers. Spot, summary, forward and feed prices are never mixed, and live and dressed weights are never averaged together.
