Compared to two weeks ago: Steer calves steady to 2.00 lower, except 600-650 lbs 7.00 to 8.00 lower. Heifer calves under 550 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, over 550 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower. Good demand for this very large offering of high quality steer and heifer calves. This week's sale was larger than usual due to the winter storm that caused the cancellation of last week's sale. The market started off very slow as the futures contracts are much lower than 2 weeks ago, but as the Feeder Cattle futures contracts made a 4.00 rally today the market activity picked up greatly. There was increased demand for light weight heifers to rough along through the winter and make yearlings of on grass next spring, as those cattle operators had a very profitable year and want to get these light cattle bought while they are available. Cattle with 2 rounds of shots remain the easiest to sell, but there were some cattle without a fall shot but were in a light flesh condition that sold at the top of the ranges as well. Hide color and shot records remain the dominant factors in the calf market, but a good, green one is highly sought after regardless. Many long strings this week, including several full load lots along with numerous half loads. Cattle feeders are feeling a little better about the fat market as the futures contracts found some firm ground and are willing to chase the market on the front end kind of cattle. Large feeder cattle sale again next week.
