Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers under 750 lbs steady to 5.00 lower, over 750 lbs too lightly tested for a complete comparison but a much lower undertone was evident. Feeder heifers 5.00 to 10.00 lower. Very good demand remains for light weight and light fleshed steers and heifers to make yearlings of. Very good demand for replacement heifers as there were many buyers on the seats actively bidding. Only moderate demand for heavier weight cattle suitable only for finishing. With the dramatic run-up in the corn market the past two weeks, and the unexpected drop in the nearby Live Cattle contracts, has cattle feeders extremely spooked. Industry members expected a robust fat market this spring but now with the weakness in the Live Cattle futures there is great concern. Feed cost have already been high, but now with corn prices up 1.00 in two weeks this is a major obstacle to overcome. Flesh condition ranged from light to moderate plus, buyers are very critical of too much flesh due to it's detrimental effect on feed efficiency. Next feeder cattle sale is March 10, 2022.
