Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy and close to the same volume as last week with the addition of several Holstein steers. Although the numbers were similar the quality was not, much of the offering this week was in smaller lots and consisted of many unweaned calves. Demand was moderate, despite overall tight supplies buyers still consider a true weaning program, a couple rounds of shots, and a sharp knife a prerequisite for market toping prices. Cattle futures also threw a wrench in to the equation today with contracts seeing wide spread of trading, opening much higher then pulling a U-turn near lunch and closing sharply lower. This caused many buyers to become uneasy as there were not any concrete reasons as to why. Some speculated tomorrow would be a higher day, and they would bounce back, while others wondered if the top has now been found and weren't as confident. One highlight of today's auction was two pot loads of yearling Holstein steers. A short flash back to the old days when Springfield, MO was the dairy steer capitol of the world and had an entire auction day devoted to selling nothing Holstein steers from daylight till dark. Needless to say, those that can remember those days sure never seen prices levels like the two pot loads sold for today back in the glory days.
