A good crowd gathered on a rainy evening for the Central Missouri Show-Me Select Bred Heifer sale held at the South Central Regional Stockyards. 70 head from 9 consignors averaged $5,051/head compared to $3,917/head for the sale held last May. Demand was good with most buyers likely having reaped the rewards of the current historic feeder cattle market and with the forage situation looking good so far again this spring.
The sale was coordinated by the Show-Me Select Board with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Heifers in this sale have met minimum requirements for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, muscle thickness, body condition and weight along with being screened for blemishes and disposition. They have undergone an extensive health program and are guaranteed bred with a percentage fetal sexed. All heifers are mated to calving ease bulls and are expected to calve from late August to mid November. Heifers were graded and sorted in to uniform lots according to projected calving dates and body type.
