Sponsored by Missouri Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers, Inc., Division of Animal Sciences, Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association in cooperation with University Extension, Commercial Agriculture Program, MU College of Veterinary Medicine, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Missouri Department of Agriculture. All heifers in the sale had met minimum standards for reproductive soundness, pelvic size, body condition and weight. A strict immunization program had been followed including Brucellosis calf-hood vaccination and tested negative for PI BVD. Heifers were bred to bulls meeting strict calving ease or birth weight EPDs. Many were synchronized and artificially bred. Projected calving dates were given and all heifers preg checked within 30 days of the sale. The offering was screened for blemishes, muscle, frame, body condition score, and disposition by a screening committee, consisting of official graders from the Missouri Dept of Agriculture and USDA, then sorted into

lots according to calving dates and similar body types.

There was a moderate crowd on hand at the JRS for their 40th Show-Me-Select heifer sale. Many producers had been or were still in the hay fields taking advantage of some ideal hay curing weather. The offering from 14 consignors were due to calve from late August to November 30. The average price per head was 1717.00 which was 35.00 less than the May 2018 sale average and the top selling lot brought 2250.00 per head. The A.I. bred heifers brought 200.00 more per head than the natural bred. The heifers were 52 % A.I. bred and 48% natural bred. Seventy-five percent of the heifers were black or black white-face and 25 percent were red or crosses.
