Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers were not well tested, however undertones were sharply higher. Steer and heifer calves were 10.00-15.00 higher with spots 20.00 higher. Demand was good on a very light supply. Excessive heat warnings remain across the area, keeping receipts lighter than normal. Most areas have seen very little rain for the month of July, which has added stress to the pastures on thin Ozarks soils. With the heat index above 110 degrees, it brings to mind a phrase from the late market reporter, Dave Smith: "The only movement of cattle in this weather is towards the shade." Forecasters are calling for cooler temperatures and lower humidity towards the weekend which will be welcomed by both men and beast. Even with the heat, new record high prices continue to be reported every day. A very bullish Cattle on Feed report came out Friday, reporting Inventories down 2 percent, Placements down 8 percent and Marketings down 5 percent.
