Compared to last week, steers sold mostly steady, firm for calves under 550 lbs. Heifer calves under 525 lbs traded 3.00-8.00 higher, too few comparable sales of heavier weights sold last week for an adequate price trend, the undertone was steady. Demand was good for calves, mostly moderate for yearlings, but light in spots. Several loads and a couple multi-load drafts of yearlings were offered, supply was moderate. The 400-650 lb weight range is being made up of mostly new crop calves now as the hard wintered yearlings are nearly all gone and ready to be turned out to grass. Everyone's focus now is on the weekly slaughter numbers and beef available to consumers as the packing plants have slowed their production. Last week 140,000 less cattle were slaughtered compared to the same week a year ago. This has made for a large disconnect between the price of live cattle and the price of beef as feeders are struggling just to get a bid to move their market ready cattle and boxed beef prices are rising as less product is available. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher with the advance mainly on boning cows. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 lower.
