Compared to last week, steers and heifers traded mostly steady to firm in spots. However, a few weight ranges for both steers and heifers didn't reach the top end prices seen last week which was mostly due to differences in type and kind. For instance, 400-500 lb steers didn't see as much activity this week but were mostly shorter weaned fleshy calves compared to last weeks big strings of thinner fleshed hard weaned calves. Also, 650-700 lb heifers sold with a lower undertone. Demand was good for both calves and yearlings and a moderate to heavy supply of quality cattle was offered. Buyers didn't shy away from the un-weaned calves and they saw only small discounts with the weather much improved. Six loads of 900 lb steers were offered and sold with a higher undertone to a load last week from the same operation. Slaughter cows sold steady to weak. Anhydrous tanks are moving and the race is on to get fieldwork done.
