As filed

Based on limited comparisons with last week's lighter offering, feeder steers under 700 lbs 3.00-10.00 lower with best demand near 650 lbs. Steers over 700 lbs sold with a lower undertone.. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs 8.00-10.00 lower, over 700 lbs not well tested. Slaughter cows steady. Demand moderate to good. Supply moderate. Lots of good to outstanding consignments this week weighing 550-775 lbs. A fire at the Tyson beef processing plant in Garden City, Ks. has the cattle market in free fall so far this week. The reduction in industry kill capacity (30,000 hd/week) will likely lead to sharply lower fed prices in the immediate future even while lower supplies are causing beef cutout values to skyrocket this week. The hope would be that the staggering profit margins seen by the packing industry in the days ahead will create incentive to ramp up kills enough at other plants to offset most of the loss in capacity.
