Friday was the second day of Green City Livestock's Annual Customer Appreciation Sale, featuring strings of home raised cattle, mostly calves with a few yearlings. The calf market picked up right where Wednesday's yearling trade left off, with steers trading 10.00 to 20.00 higher and heifers mostly 6.00 to 10.00 higher than the last tested calf market four weeks ago. Good quality throughout the day with most of the cattle in pretty green condition. Buyers were aggressive from the start, in many cases digging deeper than they normally would as pen space is readily available even for cattle looking at a lot of days on feed. With several extra buyers in the seats most of the cattle had very little trouble finding a ride to a new location. Producers continue to market their stock earlier than normal but even with large numbers moving the feeder market surge that began several months ago has experienced very little correction since the start. Cattlemen that find themselves short feed and forage have at least found solace on sale day with some new historic prices reached what seems like every week. In another interesting comparison to last year's Customer Appreciation Sale, a 580 lb steer on Friday brought a weighted average price of 302.38; a similar steer last year averaged 205.43. The trade area received a short but very welcome rain in the middle of what was already an unseasonably cool day in Missouri in July. Supply heavy, demand very good.
